More About the Series

The Verb Takes a Walk is a free six-performance series aimed at broadening the accessibility and appreciation of poetry and live performance to a wider range of people.

The Verb Takes a Walk: Poetry Meets Music is a fresh twist. Each of the shows in the series involves readings of diverse original poetry, often in collaboration with live musical accompaniment or interpretation.

Prior events have featured poets Janie Bibbie, Peaches Gillette, Brooke Lange, Daphne Sola, Adin Ljuca, Mike Finn, Gregg Weatherby, Natalie Lester, and Mark Zuss,  painter Tommy Beers, and musicians HughMcElyea , Brian Wansink, Tony Lister and Chris Loy.

The series has delivered unique poetry, visual art and music collaborations in memorable ways to appreciative audiences in since June of 2023. Each month has a particular theme that artists interpret as they wish.

The Verb Takes a Walk is made possible by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of the office of the Governor and NYS Legislature, and from Tompkins County, and it is administered by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County.

Tompkins County Poet Laureate, Janie Bibbie,

Director of The Verb Takes a Walk, Professor Mark Zuss.

Bosnian poet Adin Ljuca listens to a translation of his poetry by Cornell professor Wayles Browne.

Peaches Gillette’s imagery of growing up on 7th Street in Brooklyn during trying times made for a powerful review of the zeitgeist of the 1960s.
